This is our honest and unbiased review of Cocoon by Sealy mattress.

Before we start analyzing the mattress in detail, it is better to give you some info about its producer. Sealy is one of the most trusted names in the mattress industry with more than 130 years of experience. They have recently decided to join the bed in a box mattress trend taking over the industry with the Cacoon mattress, their newest innovation.  Sealy’s official company name is Tempur Sealy International, Inc, and it is probably the most renowned mattress provider of bedding supplies in the world.  The growing demand to avoid high-pressure sales tactics of traditional mattress stores gave rise to the bed in a box mattress model.  This has proven to be a very popular path and it has infiltrated the industry in recent years. Sealy joined the ranks and created the Cocoon mattress.

The Cocoon mattress by Sealy is crafted based on scientific sleep surface research.  This mattress manufactured using materials that are only of superior quality.  You can get the Cocoon mattress in the soft model or the firm model. There are three layers in the soft model.  The first layer is memory foam, the second is polyfoam, and the foundation layer is base foam.  These three different types of foams all combine to create a soft sleep surface that provides exceptional support, superior comfort, and minimal heat retention. The firm model is constructed of two layers.  The first is memory foam and foundation is support foam. The combination of these two layers offers a firmer, thoughtfully designed sleeping surface that provides pressure point relief, offers deep compression support, and minimizes overheating.  The two models available ensure that the Cacoon can provide your preferred firmness level and still offer the whole body support that only foam can offer.

This mattress is manufactured and designed to offer the vast majority of sleepers a comfortable and restorative night of sleep whether you prefer to sleep on a firm or soft surface. The bed in a box sales model significantly reduces the cost of the mattress and prevents high-pressure sales tactics. While this is certainly a benefit, the downside is that you can’t try the mattress out before you buy it.  It’s harder to discern if this mattress is a good fit for you. We offer an in-depth look at all aspects of this matters and provide this detailed review so that consumers like you can better determine if Cacoon is the best choice for you.

Similar Mattresses

The Tweak mattress is a fair comparison to Sealy’s Cocoon mattress.  The Tweak has customizable firmness levels for each of their mattresses as well so you can also choose the firmness level that best meets your needs.  The Tweak mattress also allows couples to customize the firmness on both sides of the mattress; this enables you to create a sleeping surface that meets the needs of couples who have different firmness preferences. The Cocoon mattress maintains the same firmness on both sides of the mattress so both sleepers should have the same firmness comfort level.

The Helix mattress can also be fairly compared to the Cocoon mattress. The notable difference between these two mattresses is that the Helix mattress layers can be interchanged for a customizable level of firmness. Both are designed to provide perfect support and exquisite comfort for every body shape and type.

Mattress Layers

The Cocoon mattress by Sealy is offered in the soft model and the firm model.  The construction of the layers is different for each mattress but they are both 10 inches thick.

The Soft Cocoon Model

The soft model has three separate layers of foam: memory foam, transitional poly foam, and base foam.

The Top Layer

The two-inch thick top layer is memory foam. This layer is responsible for the mattress’ initial comfort that is felt as soon as you lie down on it. It is a highly responsive foam and distributes your weight to contour to your exact shape.  Some say it creates a hugging feeling. This layer provides pressure point relief while you sleep.

The Middle Layer

The middle layer is also two inches thick.  This layer of transitional poly foam is responsible for the support of the mattress. It responds to the weight as it is applied to it to provide the exact support for you where you need it.  This layer supports the foundation layer and helps the entire mattress to provide deep compression support.  The middle layer transitions the foams from the softer contouring foam on the top to the firmer supportive foam on the bottom.

The Bottom Layer

The foundation layer of the soft model Cocoon is six inches of dense base foam. This layer supports the entire mattress and allows the mattress to retain its shape. Dense base foam is known to provide deep compression support further aiding in pain and pressure relief and enhancing the comfort.

The Firm Cocoon Mattress

There are only two layers of foam in the firm model of the Cocoon mattress.  This is constructed of memory foam and dense base foam.  The transitional layer has been removed for a firmer sleeping surface.

The Top Layer

Just like the soft model, the two-inch thick top layer is memory foam. This layer is responsible for the mattress’ initial comfort that is felt as soon as you lie down on it. It is highly responsive foam and distributes your weight evenly to contour to your exact shape. This layer provides pressure point relief while you sleep.

The Bottom Layer

The foundation layer of the Firm Cocoon is 8 inches of dense base foam. The soft model mattress has 6 inches of dense base foam.  The firm model is a full two inches thicker and that transitional layer has been removed to provide a firmer sleeping surface.  This thick, dense foam provides the deep compression support while responding to the weight of the sleeper and provides support exactly where you need it to prevent pressure point build-up and strain on the body. This layer also serves as the foundational base for the entire mattress so the top layer can retain its shape.

This mattress also offers two cover options, the basic cover or the Cocoon Chill cover. You can choose your preferred cover for either of the mattress models.

The straightforward basic cover is crafted from polyester and cotton blend. These materials combined create a cover that is soft, stretchy, durable, and breathable.

The Cocoon Chill cover is also a blend of polyester and cotton; however, it contains an exclusive phase change material that makes the cover actually feel cool to the touch. The addition of the phase change material gives the Cocoon Chill cover the ability to absorb body heat and to store body heat.  This unique material gives the cover the flexibility to provide cooling comfort when temperatures are high and warmth when temperatures are low.  This cover acts as a temperature regulator that creates a sleeping surface to meets the needs of your body.  The additional material does not affect the softness, breathability, durability or stretchiness of the cover.

Firmness

This mattress comes in two different firmness models.  Firmness is really subjective but if we had to assess it on a 10-point scale (1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest) the Soft model scores a 6 and the firm model sores an 8.

Comfort

The model that you choose is directly correlated to the comfort level you feel. Your comfort depends entirely on the type of feeling that you are looking for.  Both mattresses were found to be moderately comfortable.  The top layer is where you find the comfort from any mattress.  We think the layer of memory foam for both models should be thicker.

You will certainly appreciate this mattress if motion transfer impacts your sleep and comfort.  We did not experience any motion transfer at all on either model of the Cocoon mattress.

Pain Relief and Support

People who are looking for pressure point and pain relief will find that both models of the Cocoon mattress offer a great degree of support and significant improvement of pain caused by poor sleeping conditions.  Both versions mold to your body and distribute your weight evenly throughout the mattress so you’re assured the perfect amount of support individualized where you need it the most.  Deep compression support and pressure relief are exceptional for both Soft and Firm models of the Cocoon mattress.

Heat Retention

If heat retention is one of your concerns, the cover you choose will have a direct impact on how comfortable you will remain throughout the night. If you’re a hot sleeper, you’ll want to choose the Cocoon Chill cover because, even though the basic cover is breathable, you’ll experience a degree of heat retention that may create an uncomfortable sleep surface for you.  This cover is much more breathable and the phase change material reacts to your body temperature so you can stay cool as you sleep.  If you are not a hot sleeper, the basic cover is breathable enough that you may not notice any heat retention.

Off Gassing

Often you’ll hear complaints of a chemical odor coming from new foam mattresses.  Certain chemicals that are used in the construction of the foam often emit an unpleasant odor when unpacked and introduced to the new environment. As a result, foam mattresses can have a smell when they are new, and the term off-gassing is used to describe the initial expulsion of the scent. There is a fairly significant and noticeable odor we experienced with both versions of the Cocoon mattress.  The mattresses were set up in separate, well-ventilated room (windows open) and it took a few days for the odor to dissipate.

Intimacy

Motion transfer was given priority over bounce back and recoil.  There was absolutely no motion transfer with either Cocoon mattress; there is a little to no bounce and this will certainly impact any intimate activities that you wish to partake in.  You should expect to exert more energy when participating in amorous activities.

Sleeping Position Ratings

Below you will find a detailed assessment of the Cocoon’s ability to provide comfort and support for the various sleeping position. Here’s what we found…

Back Sleepers

Heavyweight back sleepers who like a firmer mattress definetely like Cocoon mattress.  The average weight back sleeper will probably find the Soft model is a better option.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers should opt for the softer model.  The firm model can feel like you’re sleeping on a board while lying on your stomach.

Side Sleepers

The firm model is going to be too hard for side sleepers.  You will get more pressure relief from the softer model as it contours better to your body.

Bed Frame Compatibility

You do not have to buy new furniture to accommodate the Sealy mattress.  It was designed to be used with all types of bed frames platform beds and box springs included.  This can also be used on adjustable bases and slatted frames.

Warranty, Guarantee and Trial Period

Warranty: 10 years

Guarantee: Full refund

Trial Period: 100 nights

Conclusion

The Cocoon mattress by Sealy is available in soft and firm models. Both models use high-quality materials and you can choose the cover options that best suits you no matter which mattress you go with.  This is a fair contender in the bed in a box market but we believe there are better options available.
