Tempurpedic or Sleep number

There are so many mattresses from a variety of manufacturers for consumers to choose from.  Two of the most popular brands of mattresses are the Tempurpedic or Sleep Number brands. If you are looking to understand the differences between these two mattresses and know which brand offers the superior sleeping experience read on for a comprehensive comparison of Tempurpedic and sleep number mattresses.

Which is better Tempurpedic or Sleep number?

It depends on what you are looking for in a mattress. Each of us has different sleeping expectations. It is impossible to make a mattress that will make everyone happy. Those two mattresses actually do not differ a lot in terms of consumer satisfaction as consumer reports also back up this claim. Both Tempurpedic and sleep number beds are of good quality and we recommend both to our readers. We compare Tempur-pedic with sleep number mattresses in detail below.

Sleep Number vs Tempurpedic Customer Reports

It seems that these top two competing brands are very close in satisfaction rates.  Tempur-Pedic satisfaction rates are marginally higher than Sleep Number satisfaction rates.  More than 3,500 survey respondents reported back and the results show Tempur-Pedic has a satisfaction rate of 81% compared to Sleep Number’s 78%. There were several categories comparing the two brands for consumer satisfaction.

  • Support: The support that a mattress offers the body is essential to deep, restful sleep. Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number each offer a unique support system. The manufacturers of the Sleep Number beds use air as the primary means to support the body.  This system affords the user the flexibility to add and remove air to individually customize the most comfortable sleep surface. On the other hand, Tempur-Pedic beds use memory foam of varying densities to offer your body a different kind of support.  While the Tempur-Pedic molds to your individual shape, the user does not have the option to adjust the firmness of the mattress.
  • Longevity: Sleep Number mattresses are reported to last for about 10 full years.  Tempur-Pedic mattresses are reported to last for about 8 or 9 years.  You’ll get one to two more years of use out of your Sleep Number bed.
  • Durability: Tempur-Pedic’s Choice model mattress has the same durability results as the Sleep Number mattress.  The non-Choice Tempur-Pedic model, however, lasts much longer than Sleep Number mattresses.
  • Quality: Survey respondents were given the opportunity to rate the quality of their sleeping experiences, and the Sleep Number mattress fell short in this category.  Consumers tend to give sleep number an average quality rating, but its Tempur-Pedic counterpart consistently received a good quality rating.
  • Price: The Sleep Number system costs about $2,550 while the Tempur-Pedic system costs about $3,370. At those average price points, you’ll pay about 24% more for a Tempur-Pedic than a Sleep Number.
  • Support: Sleep Number eeks out a slight win in the support category.  This might be attributed to the manual customization individual users can employ, but all else equal, both beds are almost identically supportive.
  • Variety: Sleep Number mattresses do not have the variety of models that Tempur-Pedic offers, but the manual intervention style the Sleep Number system offers suits so many different sleep preferences and positions that it doesn’t need to manufacture endless models to choose from.
  • Pain relief: Both Sleep Number and Tempur-Pedic sleep provide ample pain relief.  If you’re switching from a traditional innerspring mattress the difference is remarkable.
  • Motion isolation: The intrinsic qualities of foam make it a far superior product to isolate motion. Tempur-Pedic, therefore, is much better at isolating motion than a Sleep Number bed. Couples who wake each other up when moving during the night will find a Tempur-Pedic system much better at isolating motion than the Sleep Number.
  • Movement: Sleep Number mattress does not isolate movement as a memory foam mattress does.  Over time, the memory foam conforms to your body.  The warmer your body is, the more it conforms and supports you. This might mean that a Tempur-Pedic mattress can be somewhat restrictive to movement whereas a Sleep Number system is not.
  • The middle ground: With couples in mind, the manufacturers of the Sleep Number mattress designed this bed with two sets of air chambers – on each side. When the left side and right side air chambers are set to different air densities, consumers have reported discomfort in the center of the mattress where the two air chambers meet. Tempur-Pedic beds offer individual conformity without varying densities throughout the mattress.
  • Body heat: The Tempur-Pedic mattress naturally traps more body heat than its competitor.  However, only 12% of consumers reported this as a problem.  If you’re naturally a hot sleeper and it causes you discomfort, you’ll want to consider specialized memory foam for cooler sleeping conditions.
  • Quality of sleep: About one-quarter of respondents transitioning to either of these beds from traditional innerspring mattresses reported better quality sleep after the transition.
  • Maintenance: The Sleep Number bed is far more difficult to maintain than the Tempur-Pedic mattress. The Sleep Number system’s inherent design requires mechanical components that can fail, become loud, or operate inefficiently over time. The Tempur-Pedic option does not have any mechanical components that could fail or require repair.
  • Weight: Tempur-Pedic mattresses are equally as heavy as innerspring mattresses of the same size.  The Sleep Number has air chambers which make it much lighter than most mattresses of the same size.
  • Availability – Tempur-Pedic mattresses are generally more widely available than Sleep Number beds which are only available in branded stores and online.
  • Warranty and Return Policies: Sleep Number provides a 100-day in-home trial. Consumers can choose to return the bed, but they will not be reimbursed for the substantial shipping and setup fees.  Sleep Number customers must also pay the return shipping fees.  The industry-leading, in-home trial (if returned) usually costs a few hundred dollars. Conversely, Tempur-Pedic’s return policy varies from retailer to retailer and is rarely as costly. Tempur-Pedic has a top-notch, 10-year non-prorated warranty on its beds.  Should anything go awry with this system, the company will replace or repair your bed at no cost to the consumer within the first 10 years. Sleep Number, on the other hand, will only cover you for the first two years. Beyond two years, consumers pay 20% of the repair costs for up to 20 years, and 96% of the repair costs from 20 to 25 years after purchase.

Are Sleep Number beds worth it?

Yes, Sleep Number is an excellent mattress with very high consumer ratings.

Do Sleep Number beds cause cancer?

No. Sleep Number mattresses do not come with organic materials. However, they also have no toxic chemicals in their mattresses.  Sleep Number mattresses are made by Select Comfort Corporation. This is a public company offering sleep-related products since 1987. Keep this in mind, the mattress industry is well-regulated. There is a reason that this firm is able to maintain a competitive position in this industry for decades.
